Wow, what a programme! Hope the cottage turns out well, is in good hands at the moment and that inevitable outsiders are made welcome to the area very soon.

  2. Clive Sinclair Says:

Superb program. Even more special is I have been to the area several times, so know exactly how Monty feels

    Hi Monty,
I know the area, have been hovering around Wester Ross etc for about 10 years or so on Hols… Its where I felt called to the Christian Ministry… love the program and wish I was there right now… amazing place … i think i know every corner and dream of its beautiful solitude all the time. We live in Wiltshire which is by far toooo far away.

HOWIE has a valued point. Intresting that it took a film maker to make use of an old building in an area where locals need homes. :)

  5. barbara Says:

Many wonderful photos on flicker by Martin Pailthorpe of the filming of this, on his albums.

What an amazing place, such beauty and tranquility. To me it would be the ideal place to be, away from it all.

What happened to the cottage after Monty left?

  11. admin Says:

    Hi Pete
sorry for the delay in replying. After Monty left the barn was discussed and discussed and even though a number of locals had expressed an interest in leasing the croft, It has remained empty-bar the increased number of visitors milling around it.
An incredible waste, but thats the Highlands for you.

Hi Elaine sorry for not replying sooner. Don’t worry Ruben left with Monty at the end of filming and is living happily down south with Monty.

  13. Karen Says:

Is it possible to lease the cottage or even buy it. I am a regular visitor to the area and have been to have a peek on a few occassions but have never seen anyone around to ask.

  14. admin Says:

    Hi Karen
I don’t think it would be possible to buy Beachcomber Cottage, their are at least 3 resident families who want to run it as a croft but have had no look in trying to rent it. You would need to contact Archie MacLennon the Applecross Trust Agent to stand any chance.

  15. Maureen Says:

Glad about the dog being saved, but angry and disappointed that Monty couldn’t be honest about his feelings about the killing of one of his animals. I thought here what I considered to be a real man and then he did not have the courage to say ‘no it doesn’t feel good for everyone to kill animals for no reason’.

When he was cutting its throat he was obviously overwhelmed and looked like he was going to cry. Can’t one man admit that it does not feel right?

Of course he didn’t need it for food-do the producers feel that the viewers are really that dim? He was only there for six months and had no chance of starving.

Won’t be watching it again. Totally ruined a good show.

Hi Monty – did you marry your lovely girlfriend? You seem a really decent fellow and I felt for you when you had to kill your ram and pig. Reubs was a lucky dog that you picked him. Loved what you did there and we have just seen the series here in New Zealand. Well done – best programme I have seen this year. The couple that helped you were delightful and I hope you all keep in touch. Kind regards from Hamilton New Zealand

  17. Tim Percy-Dove Says:

    What breed is Rueben?

  18. Liz Sinclair Says:

I am thoroughly enjoying the programme which is airing in Australia just now. How very lucky you were to get the use of this croft for a few months and I’m really very happy to see that you embrace everything that comes your way, be it Highland Games, diving, climbing your first Munro and yes, even processing your own meat. That was brave and so many of us don’t want to face the truth of where meat comes from! Good on you. From expats here down under, all the best to you mate and thanks for the absolutely fantastic insight into crofting life.
    So very appreciative!
    Liz

Just saw a re-run of this show here in Oz. Breathtaking scenery, days of hard work but made better with new friends and a hell of a lot of fun along the way all with man’s best friend at your side.

Huge Congrat’s to Monty on such a marvelous show … as they say, a picture says a thousand words. What a magical place. Sure looks like the perfect place to get away from the rat race.

Life on the land isn’t easy at times, but great to see you showing the reality of having your own stock and living off them and what they produce for you as needed.

Having two dogs of my own here “down under” who’d love the cold weather over there, I couldn’t stop laughing at Rube’s antic’s in the snow on the first drive out to the croft and his own version of “hen huntin” when the chooks first arrived at the croft … followed by Monty’s discovery of Rube’s plastic chook toy out of the truck – Priceless :) ). Loved the bag of dog toys too by the way guys :) .

I loved my first visit to Scotland, but I didn’t travel as far west as Applecross … but after watching this show, I’ll be going back again asap and I can’t wait :) ).

Aazing Show Guys !!! Well done to all involved.

We love the programme and can relate to the lifestyle as we have done just that in Tasmania here in Australia. Wanted to find out more about the solar panel system Monty put in. Can you give some details or a website as to what was used and where it came from. Would like to do that here somehow. Hope Monty can do more of that style of programme. Good work.
    Regards,

  21. Leanne Says:

I love to know if it is possible to see the series on DVD as I missed the first few shows here in Australia.

  22. Auj Says:

I have always dreamed of reaching Scotland with the whole family. In the past, it was our dream to migrate to amazing places like New Zealand. And it is really sad how tragic things can be when nature strikes these days like the earthquakes and other stuff. All we have to do is really pray harder these days.
